Colchester Castle to host craft fayre

A CRAFT fayre will be held in Colchester Castle next month.

Handmade stalls selling leather belts, candles, historic jewellery, mosaics, artwork and more will be on display on Saturday, March 9 from 11am to 4pm.

Entrance is 50p. Children enter free with an adult.

The castle is supposed to be closed to allow all the displays to be revamped. Why is it being used for all these ephemeral events? Why does it have to be closed for this long? It is our museum, we want to be able to see it and take our guests to it. Can anyone answer this?

The displays are not just being 'revamped' - the castle has been completely stripped out ahead of major work being undertaken. The 4.5m pound funding will be spent on underfloor heating, insulating the roof space, consolidating the roof and the north, south and east outer walls, a comprehensive building recording of the inside of, new public toilet configuration, a new elevator, and a completely reconfigured display area both down stairs and up stairs. Even if they didn't open it up for a month's worth of activities and open days, the scale of the work being undertaken would still require the building to be closed down for roughly the same amount of time.

These events are a fantastic chance to the the castle without views being blocked. Can't wait.

Beer Festival, Shakespere etc. Bring it on.
