REPAIRS to a pontoon damaged after a ship crashed into it will start this week.

Mariners using Brightlingsea Harbour are being warned of the works due to start on Tuesday.

A barge will be stationed alongside the Fisherman’s Pontoon to remove the damaged piles and install new supports. Boats going past the repair site are asked to travel slowly and create a minimal wash.

The damage happened on November 15 when the 2,800 tonne timber barge Calamar smashed into it in foggy conditions. An investigation by the harbour commission cleared the ship’s crew and pilot of any wrong-doing.
