Action at A120 Hare Green danger junction 'within weeks'

A SAFETY audit will be carried out at a danger junction within weeks after top level talks demanded action.

The Highways Agency has finally agreed urgent action needs to be taken on the Hare Green junction of the A120 and will draft a report assessing its safety by March 8.

Tendring Council called an emergency meeting on Wednesday, February 20, to air fears that changes to the layout made a year ago have only made matters worse.

The council was joined by Essex fire, police and ambulance services and Essex County Council to make the case.

The Standard demanded the Highways Agency took more action after a number of horror smashes on the stretch of road near Great Bromley. It had previously planned to carry out a review in April, 12 months after the junction was changed.

Once a report is written the group will decide what action needs to be taken at a second meeting at Clacton Town Hall on March 8.

I am constantly amazed by the accidents that occur here on a regular basis. What is the matter with these people. I own a business that is close to this junction and use the junction regularly without difficulty, as it used to be and as it is today. It is quite unnecessary to put a roundabout or lights there. It is the standard of people's driving that is the problem. How do you cater for idiots on our roads?

You are lucky, Jess Jephcott, if you have got your manoeuvres finely tuned over the years. It's not just the idiots, it's dangerous for visitors not familiar with the road, and dangerous for locals who might have had that one stressful day and get caught out. Horsley Cross got their roundabout, I hope Great Bromley gets theirs soon.

Surely if a roundabout or some other safety measure can save one life it's worth it is it not?

Just because someone makes a mistake or has a lapse of judgement doesn't mean they should die! You cater for 'idiots on our roads' by making provision for them in the same way as we do in other areas such as pedestrian crossings, speedbumps, traffic lights, yellow boxes etc.

The fact is that this junction has claimed lives and caused numerous accidents and, regardless of fault, it needs to be made safer. How would you like it if your son or daughter were involved with an 'idiot' driver and could have been saved by a simple roundabout?
