Extra patrols after two men in van offer to give girl, 9, a lift to school

EXTRA patrols have been launched after two men in a van offered to give a nine-year-old girl a lift to school.

The girl was approached in Artillery Street, Colchester, by men in a large silver-grey van at 8.25am last Tuesday.

She was offered a lift, but ran to school.

Police searched the area but could not trace the area.

Additional patrols have been carried out around teh town's schools, while staff have been given details of the vehicle.

Anyone with information should contact the investigating officer Pc Lindsey Mason or her colleagues at Colchester Neighbourhood Crime Team on 101.

So, this 9 year old was walking to school by herself then? WHERE WERE THE PARENTS?!

She was 9!!! Sounds like the guys were trying to be friendly and help a young girl, 9 is very young to be wandering around alone.

Gazette promoting fear in the community based on nothing, nice job!

Oh, that the world was such a nice place. They may well have been trying to be helpful, but the message has always been not to talk to strangers, and certainly not to get into their vehicles. That was the message when I was a kid, and still is.

If they did stop for that reason, they must surely be aware of how it is going to look, and for that reason alone, should not do it.

9 is not too young to be wandering around alone if you know where you are.

Don´t think the Gazette is promoting fear, but it is a good reminder to parents to make sure their kids do understand about not talking to strangers etc. It´s not a modern thing, I was told that 40 odd years ago.
