Essex Uni scientists win Euro grant
SCIENTISTS at Essex University have a share of a €2 million grant to improve internet connectivity.
The 36-month SODALES project is trying to improve the connection between homes and the local network hub.
Professor Stuart Walker leads the university team which along with four commercial partners from Spain, Portugal, Germany and Israel has won the European Commission grant.
They hope to develop street-based wireless base stations which can beam a faster signal directly into the home. Having the technology by the roadside means it can also be easier to upgrade and cheaper to install as it will not involve engineers needing access to customers’ homes.
The university’s Access Networks Laboratory will be used to test and develop the project and the consortium hopes for a commercially viable prototype at the end.
- SODALES stands for Software-Defined Access using Low-Energy Subsystems.
