FAQ published in response to High Street car ban criticisms

A GUIDE to the High Street car ban has been published following a barrage of complaints - even before the scheme is launched.

The FAQ, published on the Colchester Council wesbite, also revealed the scheme will run for 18 months, six months longer than previously expected.

It was drawn up after council leader, Anne Turrell, received a flurry of responses from residents, traders and other parties with fears about experimental ban.

She has urged people to wait and see how it works in practice before criticising the scheme.

I think it is fair to say the "flurry of responses" is mainly from people who are totally against this crackpot idea. Close the road to all traffic or leave it open to all traffic. What is planned is not pedestrianisation and it won't benefit many people, particularly most of the traders who will have to pay more for timed deliveries and bulky goods will not be able to be collected. A prime reason to just shop out of town.

Don't suppose the extension to an eighteen Month ban has anything to do with ensuring the (so called) trial goes on beyond May 2014 when local elections will be held!

Also interesting to note CBC are promoting the Town Hall as a wedding venue, their website even says there is parking right outside the front of the Town Hall. How will that work? or will CBC give themselves special dispensation?

I have been querying the wedding vehicle access since this was announced. On Friday I was told licensed vehicles have access, but when I pointed out most wedding cars, including the horse and carriage shown on the TH Wedding website, are exempt from being licensed (so are funeral vehicles), they seemed unaware of this, even though they issue the relevant private hire licenses!. They are going to consult Chelmsord CC for a reply to this, so let's hope we get one before the next wedding or the bride has been mis-sold the venue.

I understand traffic will be allowed to go up West Stockwell Street. As a general point a lot of people want complete pedestrianisation and so do I. But how would that help traders? There would be no deliveries in the High Street at any time. And sorting out the bus routes would be a nightmare.

Read the FAQ. It's funny. Deluded public sector doublespeak at its very best. This bit tickled me:

Q: Will the proposals lead to increased traffic in Brook Street?

A: We are investigating ways to minimise the likely additional traffic in Brook Street. Advanced signing will be installed to discourage unnecessary traffic from using this route.



Q: Will the proposals move additional traffic onto Balkerne Hill, Southway and Cowdray Avenue?

A: The changes proposed will help make it easier for more journeys to and around the town centre to be made by more sustainable travel options including walking, cycling and public transport. This will help reduce any impact of additional traffic on surrounding routes. All the main routes surrounding the town centre have additional capacity but there may be impacts at some junctions and roundabouts.



So, in conclusion...Surroun
ding routes will be clogged. High Street businesses will suffer because of restricted delivery times. There will be no pedestrianisation benefits in the High Street because of the continued presence of buses, taxis, motorbikes, bikes.
