Clever Emma wins school £5,000 garden

WORDSMITH Ella Humm has won a national writing competition and landed her school with a £5,000 nature garden.

 

11-year-old Ella, who goes to Roach Vale Primary School, was one of thousands of pupils around the country who entered the poetry competition, run by the National Gamekeepers Organisation Educational Trust.

Her poem, called ‘Wildlife’, tells the story of animals in the school grounds in the run up to winter.
Year Six teacher Gary Tuttlebee, who encouraged his class to enter the competition, which closed in November.

“We had been working on personification of animals and I thought this was a perfect way to test their knowledge out,” he said.

“So I gathered the work from the whole class and sent them in.

“It was only after Christmas when the head came and asked if we had entered it and I remembered and we were told we had a winner.”

As a prize, garden experts will come to the school later this month and a create a nature garden, worth £5,000.

Ella was also given £100 worth of book tokens.
