Could Lion Walk shopping centre host a new market?

Could Lion Walk shopping centre host a new market? Could Lion Walk shopping centre host a new market?

THE manager of Colchester’s Lion Walk has revealed he wants to create a market in his shopping centre.

Paul Bentham is in the early stages of trying to create a “high-quality” market with up to 20 stalls on land near Boots.

The proposed project is one of several ideas Mr Bentham will air at a new marketing forum, which six regular shoppers are being invited to join.

He said: “If we could get a proper market set up on a regular day with some quality marketholders, would Colchester people go for that?

Doesn't the Colchester Market Charter state that the council cannot allow any rival markets in the town centre?

It does indeed, so this would have to be part of the authorised market.

However don't forget this is the same man who at the end of last year kicked out the market traders in the shopping centre and that the council fought to keep them there.

I wonder if the council and existing traders will remember that.

The space in question is a performance space not a market space. Losing it will damage the vibrancy of the town.

What !!!!!!!!!! Surely anything that may possibly attract people should be worth looking into. I walk through there many times and I admit I must have missed the "vibrancy"

Why on earth would more market space in such a small area attract more people? I would rather see the Salvation Army or the Tai Chi folk or the various street performers that use the space there on a regular basis. This Bentham bloke is too big for his boots and should stick to what he is good at - seemingly!

Oh I'm sure people will flock to the town and that huge waves of cash will follow them if they can see Tai Chi folk or the Salvation Army why don't we see if we can get a couple of mimes in too?

We need a proper market with all the stalls in one place not dotted here and there around the town.

I agree with Justice79 the market was never the same after it was taken off the High Street, Time for a rethink if the council go ahead with closing the High Street to try and put it back there.

Life's changed since then. Markets used to sell stuff cheaper than shops - now they don't. They're an anachronism sorry to say.
