Warning after con artists try shop scam
5:19pm Wednesday 30th January 2013 in News By Will Lodge
A TOWN centre shop is warning other businesses after con artists tried to swindle cash from the till.
Two men tried to pull a scam at Shakeaway in Sir Isaac’s Walk this afternoon but fortunately staff cottoned on to the pair’s antics and they walked away empty-handed.
The attempted scam saw one man pay for a cheap item with a £20 note and accept the change, before trying to confuse staff by pulling out a handful of coins and notes and ask to change them up. In the confusion the con artist hoped to walk away with more money than he paid for the item, while his accomplice distracts staff further.
The men were described as presentable, both wearing gilets and sweaters, with one about 6ft 3ins and the other 6ft. The shorter man had slicked back black hair, and both men were in their mid- to late-20s.
