Could Colchester's top recyclers be rewarded with Nectar points?

RESIDENTS who do their bit for the environment could be rewarded with Nectar points.

Colchester Council is investigating whether those who diligently recycle as much rubbish as possible should be given Nectar points or a similar offer.

The proposal was revealed in a debate over whether people who refuse to recycle should be fined.

Martin Hunt, councillor responsible for waste, said: “While it is important for me to have the power to issue the fixed penalty notices, we need to find a way where people who already recycle are rewarded.”

Council tax reduction would be more of an incentive

So we have to actually put stuff out for recycling to be rewarded. Nothing for those with a compost heap, those that buy products loose and not packed in mutli-layers of cardboard, those that take items to the charity shop or return the glass bottles to the milkman thus not filling a bag with plastic?

Thing is, I don´t suppose the amounts being talked about would be huge, and we also need to get on side those who do not pay council tax. But if you knew that you could recycle each week and maybe pick up 30 quid every few months, it might be an incentive to do it.

There can´t be a huge spending on this, but in principle, less rubbish going into landfill means less expense for the council, so using some of that as the "carrot" might persuade some who do not now recycle.

Maybe they could look at sorting out recycling in some parts of Colchester where it's practically non-existent first. For instance the flats where I live have no separate recycling/waste sections, so despite the fact I separate out card and plastic as force of habit they usually end up in the same place. I take glass to supermarket recycling area's but card/can/bottle bins are frequently overflowing making that part pointless.

Rather than rewarding people for doing something they should do anyway, why not spend that money making it easier for those who want to but lack the facilities.

Manningtree is under Tendring Council, not CBC. You get the same treatment as the rest of the households within your Council's area.

Why Tendring is so far behind the times with recycling is beyond me.

Presumably this is a rhetorical question... it would be impossible to vet this, but dont worry we all know a reward scheme wont happen.

But with luck the obstinate few % who make no effort at all will get some sort of penalty.

We use 2 black sacks a week now instead of one, since they do not collect all of the plastic they used to collect.
