County council to give away old computers

THOUSANDS of old computers will be given to charity by Essex County Council.

As part of the council’s modernisation programme more than 6,000 laptops and PCs will be replaced and many of them donated to voluntary groups and charities in the county. The total figure to be donated is currently unknown.

The old computers are being replaced by the council and will be cleared of all data and refurbished at no cost to the authority before being passed on.

The refurb might not be costing the authority, ie us, anything, and I suppose it's good that charity is benefitting, but it might have been nice to sell some of these off and return some of their cost to council's coffers. Knowing the way councils procure equipment, you can bet they paid top dollar for this kit - and it would be good to know just how old it is?

Read the link, the specs are on there. I doubt they could sell them, but for things like adult education centres offering taster sessions they'll be fine.

A good initiative but sadly many if not all of them would have been Pentium PCs which run Windows, not known for its ease of use.
