Candlelight vigil for laboratory beagles
A CANDLELIGHT vigil will take place to protest against animal testing.
Campaigners for Save the Harlan Beagles want to force the closure of Harlan Interfauna laboratories.
Its supporters claim they test on live beagle dogs which are treated badly in captivity.
The vigil will take place in Trinity Street between 2pm and 5pm on Saturday.

what?!?! I dont think being experimented on is a life style. In this day and age why their is still a need for animal testing beggars belief.

so how do we test medical science you will be adding to the unemployment and burdening the pet rescue centres with a problem of trying to feed and home these dogs that's like giving a crèche a wild wolf to play with

Beagles are hunting dogs which have no mercy when they get hold of hares (not rabbits) so there is no need to be sentimental about them.
But it would surely be better if they were to switch from testing on beagles to testing on staffordshire bull terriers, of which there is a huge surplus which the RSPCA has to put down all the time because nobody wants them.

The tests they undergo in laboratories include toxicology where they are forced to inhale fumes from bleach, weed killer and other similar substances in doses that exceed those that would kill a human. The beagles are watched as they die painful slow deaths and the employees simply record their final moments. Sometimes they are cut open so that their internal organs can be observed too....they are still alive at this stage and are able to feel the pain inflicted upon them.
Testing on animals for research is a flawed science. Drugs that test safe on animals do not transfer to humans. Vioxx that tested safe on animals and used to trear arthritis killed 140,000 people. Thalidomide also tested as safe on animals and we all should be able to recall what happened there.
To suggest that the beagles are treated well is plainly without foundation and I suggest also displays a degree of lack of understanding of the subject matter. Make no mistake, animals that are tested on in laboratories are subjected to horrific torture for no other reason than to earn massive multi national pharma companies billions of pounds. There is no need for such tests as modern research methods that involve skin cell and computer modelling research is far more reliable and will save the lives of humans and animals alike.

at least these dogs have a home unlike the abandoned dogs that get abused by unworthy dog owners . These Beagles are happy as its all they know so why change there life style ????? if these Beagles were in the open i would love to see them running as a beagle hunting pack chasing rabbits etc as they were bred to hunt not be pets .
What a stupid comment to make!
