Seal spotted in town centre river
5:00pm Friday 14th December 2012 in News By James Cox
A SEAL gave park visitors a shock when it emerged from a river in Colchester town centre - almost ten miles inland.
It was spotted by the weir in East Hill park, next to the old Mill Hotel, on Wednesday morning.
Wildlife experts have warned people not to approach it but to report further sightings.
Remarkably, the seal was caught on camera by amateur photographer Dave Lawrence, of Old Heath Road.
- Have you seen the seal? Report it to Essex Wildlife Trust on 01621 862960.

Absolutely disgusting behaviour. Sea lions belong in the sea not a small flat on the greenstead estate. This Dave Lawrence chap should feel ashamed for keeping such a magnificent beast in captivity. I am appalled.
think you have been reading the wrong story.
i am sure that it was a lovely site being able to see a seal swimming in our waters although it has obviously swam in from somewhere else and maybe got lost. hope it finds it way back soon.

Illegal Sea Lion trafficking. I am appalled and disgusted that this is going on just down the road from me on the Greenstead estate. They ought to arrest all involved and lock them up.

Since when has the River Colne flowed through the town centre? It would have to flow up hill to get into the town centre.

That's actually the complete opposite of a successful pedant, who needs to be getting things right. Castle Park is a town centre park, just like Chelmsford's Central Park (clue's in the name with that one), for heaven's sake.

The actual town centre is clearly marked on some maps on the internet.

TC could be within Head Street, High Street, Queen Street, and St. Johns Street or within the Roman Walls or Castle Polling area or Castle Ward.
As far as I'm concerned and a lot of others Castle Park is in the TC and so is part of the Colne. Lots of others would disagree. But really I think that all are acceptable definitions

But in a way, does it matter? The actual story is about a seal. It amuses me that I have never seen you comment on any story except to correct a street name or definition of an area. It would be great to know your views on the actual subjects!

Proofreader, I was being a bit tongue in cheek. As it happens, I agree that the location where this seal was seen (Colne at East Street) is not in what I would call the town centre. For me, I guess it would be broadly what is inside the Roman walls, extending out to Southway and including Crouch St, St John´s St, St Botolphs and Town Station.

PROOFREADER wrote:This is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. Why have you commented on my comment instead of commenting on the story. Reports need to be accurate no matter what the story is. There would be no point in the Gazette asking for witnesses to something that had happended if they cannot even get the exact location correct. If local news programmes like the BBCs Look East can get facts correct then why cannot the Gazette get them correct too.
