ESSEX Police have stopped more than 200 drivers in this year's Christmas anti drink-drive campaign.

But of the 217 people stopped across Essex only six men (2.8 per cent) failed a breathalyser test.

Adam Pipe, casualty reduction manager, said: "While the percentage of those found drink driving is similar to previous years I am shocked by the drivers we have stopped who are heavily intoxicated and behind the wheel of a car. It is frightening to think what devastation they could have caused.

"Anyone who knows someone who regularly drinks and drives should report them to Essex Police on 101 or they can give information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

  • Another driver, from Tiptree, will appear in court early next year after failing a roadside breath test.
The man, 72, was arrested in the village in the evening of December 7 after being found in a broken down stationary vehicle, and was found to be more than twice the legal limit.
He will appear at Colchester Magistrates' Court on January 8.
