CLACTON MP Douglas Carswell visited anti-knife campaigners at a town centre shop.

Mr Carswell met with campaigners ahead of his debate on knife crime in Parliament on Tuesday November 27.

He discussed his upcoming Westminster appearance on Saturday November 24 at the Jackson Road shop where volunteers have been collecting signatures against knife related crime.

Mr Carswell has previously backed the Gazette’s campaign Lives Not Knives, which was launched following a series of high-profile knife crimes in the town, as well as the murder of Clacton teenager Jay Whiston in Colchester in September.

Jay’s mum Caroline Shearer has called for a four-year mandatory jail sentence for anyone caught with a weapon, as well as for knife crime awareness to be included on the national curriculum.

Mr Carswell will be higlighting the issue in Parliament and hopes police will carry out more stop and searches in North Essex to tackle knife crime.
