A DEVELOPER wants to build homes on a recreation ground in Colchester.

Luton-based company Dishland, which owns Gas Recreation Ground, in Parsons Heath, wants to build the homes on half of the ten-acre site and use the other half for community projects.

Dennis Diggin, director of Dishland, has also pledged to find a new home for Essex Suffolk Border League Gas Rec FC, which has played there for 30 years.

“This is the best thing for the community,” said Mr Diggin.

But Dishland has been warned it faces a battle to get permission for the development.

Paul Smith, borough councillor for St John's, said: "The bottom line is this land is not zoned for housing. It is classified as open space."
