The chief constable of Essex Police will stand down before the end of his contract, it has been confirmed.
Jim Barker-McCardle told the Police and Crime Commissioner candidates in an e-mail three weeks before Thursday's poll.
He said he was resigning for personal reasons but has not set a date for his departure.
