No fanfare as £2m bus station goes into gear

COLCHESTER'S new £2 million bus station will open without fanfare on Sunday.

Services will start operating from the new terminus, in Osborne Street and Stanwell Street.

But there will be no immediate ribbon-cutting or official unveiling by the authorities behind it - Colchester and Essex County councils.

Instead, a ceremony is planned for a few weeks' time.

The station has a waiting lounge, two shelters with seating and improved toilets.

Passengers can find out information from electronic timetable screens and information pods.

See today's Gazette and Essex County Standard for more.

It is a stupid place to put a bus station! I have already been blocked in by incompetant bus drivers blocking the exit from the Vineyard Street Car Park. I even took a photo of them as I was at a stand still.

No fanfare because they're scared that it will be a complete and utter disaster (as it may well be). It's not a bus station. Barton's Folly is a big bus stop and a £2m smoking shelter for Gala Bingo users. The whole bus station saga in Colchester is testament to the incompetence of all the officials and authorities involved over many years. And don't get me started on the Golden Fleecers in their rusty Firsts*ite shed...

Apparently we are seeking City of Culture status. Why not go for City of Whinger status too? We could surely out-whinge anybody.

it is a pity the bus stops were not opened along with banning private vehicles from the town centre.what a lovely pedestrian christmas that would have been.

Why does everyone keep going on about pedestrianising the town centre?

How many times have you shopped on the High st? There's only W&G and that's it, so making it a walking zone is a waste of money and resources.
