PRIMARY school children got the first taste of a new Colchester Zoo campaign.

Kids from St Andrew’s Primary School, in Marks Tey, got to see first-hand the 2.5metres high model giraffes which are set to take over streets, parks and open spaces in Colchester next summer.

The Stand Tall event is taking place to celebrate the 50th birthday of Colchester Zoo.

St Andrew’s was one of the first schools to sign up to the programme.

Leila Berkeley, headteacher said: “Stand Tall is a message that resonates with us all and the children are extremely excited to be taking part in this community event.”

Mrs Berkeley also said the event would be linked to its annual arts week, adding: “This is an ideal opportunity and meaningful way for our children to be involved in the biggest town project of 2013.

Colchester Zoo is still inviting schools to come forward and take part in the event.

Each participating school will be asked to design their own 1.3m giraffe, which will feature in different inside locations in the town during the 13-week programme.
