* A housing developer's bid to knock down Colchester's former Cavalry barracks has been blocked.
Bovis Home applied for permission to knock down the former Sergeants' Mess and school, the regimental institute, troop stables and smithy and shoeing shed but planning officers said the buildings must be preserved.
* A hair stylist disturbed burglars ransacking the beauty salon where she works.
Loren Davies, 20, spotted the raiders after they borken into Snip 'n Shape in Dovercourt High Street.
