Rare bird mistakes Abberton for the Sahara
9:00pm Monday 29th October 2012 in News
A HOT weather bird mistook sand being used for construction around Abberton Reservoir for the Sahara Desert.
Bird watchers have been flocking to the centre to catch a glimpse of the Desert Wheatear.
Experts say this is only the third time the bird has been spotted at Essex in 100 years.
The silly female was seen at the Essex Wildlife Trust Centre, at Abbotts Hall Farm, over the weekend, where it has made its temporary home having been redirected by strong easterly winds.
“It would have been migrating and it is likely from above it may have mistaken all the sand being used by Essex and Suffolk Water for a desert and landed there,” said Charlie Oliver, of the Essex Wildlife Trust.
