A former soldier sleeping in a caravan has been told he cannot have a council home.

Philip Vernon, who served in Iraq, quit the army in May and is living on his cousin's drive in Colchester.

If this chap can't find the deposit for a house, perhaps he should look at the council's rent deposit guarantee scheme.

This man said he had given in his notice 12 months ago after 15 years in the army. Surely 15 years earning a wage gave him enough time to save something for when he left. I have just retired but have been saving a small amount for the last 10 years towards it. Just because he was in the Army does not make him any different to anybody else.
