AN appeal to raise money for a play area for children with severe learning difficulties has received a major boost.

The 100,000 Smiles appeal aims to raise £100,000 to recreate a play haven for children at Lexden Springs special school.

Just over £5,000 was raised through a school fete, a walkathon and through donations.

But now a Good Samaritan has stepped forward with a generous donation of £10,000.

That, together the funds already in the kitty means the total now stands at £26,000.

Charlotte Foxley, chairman of the school’s PTA, said she was overwhelmed by donor’s generosity.

Charlotte, whose son, Charlie, is a pupil at the school, said: “The donor read an article in the paper and asked to have a look around the school.

“He then donated this money. We are overwhelmed by this act of generosity from the individual who would like to remain anonymous.

“It is such a kind and moving gesture.

“We would like to thank him very much.”

The fundraisers are currently applying for grant funding to boost the appeal and would also welcome donations and fundraising.

Children at the school benefit from being able to play as it gives them independence and improves their mobility, balance and wellbeing.

However, the school in Halstead Road has a limited playground and poor play facilities.

It wants to create a play area on the small school field.

The campaign, which is supported by the Gazette, would pay for a play area which would feature swings and a roundabout which can be used by disabled children including those in wheelchairs.

There would also be a bubble tunnel, wobble board and wavy bridge to assist children with their agility and balance.

A wavy mirror will provide sensory stimulation while a spongey floor would be installed to ensure children are not hurt if they fall.

For the more able children, there would be a rope climbing frame.
