CARNIVAL goers are being encouraged to help set a new world record.

Organisers Colchester Round Table and Ladies Circle want to break the world record for the most number of people playing hopscotch at the same time.

The brainchild of artists Richard deDomenici and Caroline Wright, the attempt will be taking place in the lower Castle Park at 2pm on Carnival Day on June 30.

They hope to recruit hundreds of people of all ages.

Army and community groups have already put themselves forward but more volunteers are needed if they are to break the current record of 358, achieved by Bupa, in the O2 in London in June 2011.

Mrs Wright said: “Bringing together sport and art in the attempt to break the work record for the number of people hopscotching simultaneously is not just about breaking records.

“It's about the taking part and doing something together in a collective endeavour.”
