A MUM who starred in a television documentary following her hair loss has opened her own wig consulting room.

Carly Barratt, 36, was one of four people picked to appear in BBC Four’s No Body’s Perfect programme.

The show tackled attitudes to beauty and Carly, of Colchester, worked with disabled artist Alison Lapper and internationally-renowned photographer Rankin.

Carly started to suffer from hair loss - alopecia - when she 11 but she has never really known the cause.

Before taking part in the programme she had never dared go out in public without a wig on.

Now Carly has gained so much confidence, not only can she do that but she’s opened a business in a hair salon where customers can find a wig to suit them.

Carly said: “The opportunity came up so I thought I would jump at it.

“It is just somewhere really nice in my eyes. People deserve to be treated like VIPs. It is like a sanctuary people wander into and when they go out they are on cloud nine.”

Carly is a clerical officer for Colchester General Hospital’s breast screening service so is balancing this job two days a week while tending to clients on demand at the salon.

The salon, in Shrub End Road, Colchester, has called her salon Angels Hair Studio.

She is also available for home visits for customers who may feel more comfortable in their own setting.

Her section of the salon is part of a number of new services it offers after undergoing a revamp.

The hair salon, which it started its life as, is still run by Natasha Lunniss and now caters for wig wearing clients too.

Body healing is offered by Amanda Boyce while Helen Watson has a psychotherapy clinic there.

No Body’s Perfect involved Carly, who is mum to Pheobe, ten, and Cameron, 14, having a photo shoot with Rankin, including a photo with no wig.
