FOOTBALL stars helped spread some Christmas cheer to poorly youngsters.

Ipswich Town players visited the Children’s Unit at Colchester General Hospital to give out presents to patients and their siblings who will have to spend the festive period away from their homes.

The players paid for Christmas gifts out of their own pocket including teddy bears, stationery sets and chocolates which were handed out during the visit.

As well as the presents, players left behind toys, DVDs and arts and crafts materials which will be used by youngsters all year round who have to come onto the unit.

Amongst the players who appeared were defenders Josh Emmanuel and Myles Kenlock, midfielders Jonathan Douglas and Adam McDonnell, and striker Freddie Sears.

Mr Sears, who signed for Ipswich from Colchester United in January 2015, said he was delighted to visit the hospital alongside his teammates.

He said: “The team visit six local hospitals and hospices around this time every year and it’s something we enjoy doing.

“If we can make someone in hospital feel a little better by giving them a gift or spending some time with them, then we’re all for it.”

As well as dropping off the gifts, players stuck around to sign autographs and chat with parents and staff during their hour-long visit to the unit.

Sister on the Children’s Ward Kim Ness said she was pleased to see the players continue visiting the youngsters.

She said: “Ipswich Town have been loyal, committed and much-valued supporters of the Children’s Unit over many, many years.

“This is deeply appreciated by all the staff who, along with the children and parents, really enjoy meeting the players.

“When they visit, we know Christmas is just around the corner.”

The Children’s Unit consists of a ward, assessment centre, elective care unit and outpatient department, and serves children from newborns to 16 years-old from all over Colchester, Tendring and Halstead and the Colne Valley.
