A PILE of waste wood went up in flames.
Fire crews from Colchester and Wivenhoe attended the blaze at Haven Road in Colchester at 5.45pm on Friday.
The pile, measuring 20 metres wide and long, was 80 per cent alight when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters used two unmanned jets and one covering jet to control the fire and protect the area.
The fire was extinguished by 9.45pm.
Fire investigators believe the blaze was started accidentally.
