A MAN has died following a crash.

Police were dispatched to Salisbury Avenue, Westcliff, at around 7.40pm last night.

The man, in his forties, was in collision with a red Ford Focus and died at the scene from cardiac arrest.

A 27-year-old man from Southend was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

He remains in custody.

There was a heavy police presence at the scene yesterday evening, with the road taped off from the Balmoral Centre to Cliff Avenue.

The East of England Ambulance despatched a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance officer and two ambulance crews, as well as the East Anglian Air Ambulance, which landed at Southend High School for Boys in Prittlewell Chase at 8.15pm.

However, although the first ambulance crew arrived within four minutes, nothing could be done for the man.
