A CAMPAIGN to install interpretation signs in Colchester has notched up another success.

The Friends of Colchester Roman Wall group is set to unveil the next in the series of interpretation boards this weekend.

The group wants to put 13 boards in total around the wall, which is the longest Roman town wall in the country.

The first boards have been installed at Duncan's Gate and Balkerne Gate and on Saturday, another sign will be unveiled at Beacon House at 90 East Hill, Colchester.

The board will commemorate the site of the East Gate of Colchester, which used to guard the entrance to the town half-way up East Hill.

The gate was built in the 1st century AD and lasted 1600 years until it was damaged in the Siege of Colchester in 1648 and pulled down in 1651.

Colchester Council's portfolio holder for heritage Tim Young will be the guest of honour at the unveiling which will take place at 10am on Saturday.

Each board costs £1,000 and includes a QR code so smartphone users can scan it and find out information about that part of the wall.
