A BENEFITS cheat who conned taxpayers out of thousands of pounds has been fined £200.
Andrew Clarke, 65, of Spinnaker Close, Clacton, hid more than £40,000 of savings from the Department for Work and Pensions to get pension credits.
The retired construction manager made false statements in March 2010, and again the following month.
Colchester Magistrates’ Court heard his lies gained him £6,622.44 over 39 weeks.
When interviewed he admitted not declaring his savings so he could get a new car and furnish his house. He repaid the money after getting caught.
