A FILM depicting a tragic incident involving Colchester’s paratroopers will be premiered next month.

Kajaki, which tells of Corporal Mark Wright, 27, who died in 2006 trying to save 3 Para colleagues trapped in an Afghanistan minefield, will be unveiled at Vue West End cinema in London’s Leicester Square on November 12.

It was filmed in Jordan over six weeks this summer after a successful effort to raise £1.2million.

It tells how the soldiers were trapped while stationed at the Kajaki Dam in 2006.

A three-man patrol was sent to disable a Taleban roadblock, but a desperate rescue effort was sparked after one detonated a landmine.

The script is based on interviews with the soldiers involved and the family of Corporal Wright, and on the Army’s Board of Enquiry report into the incident.

Director Paul Katis said: “There has not been a war movie depicting British soldiers in true events from any conflict since the Second World War. We set out to rectify that with a film that depicts the experiences of soldiers in Afghanistan.”

Kajaki: The True Story will later be screened at Vue Cinemas nationwide, including one at Thurrock. Revenue from ticket sales to the premiere and pre-release screenings, plus a portion of profits from the film’s release, will benefit Help for Heroes, the Royal British Legion, Walking With the Wounded and the Hashemite Commission for Disabled Soldiers.
