Flames ripped through a former snooker club in the Hythe, Colchester.
The town's firefighters were alerted just after 2am on Saturday to reports of smoke coming from the roof of the building on Hythe Quay.
Two fire tenders and an aerial ladder platform were sent to the scene, and arrived to find the former Mr Pools club - previously the Piccolo Padre pub - on fire.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went in the building to fight the fire, but were pulled out amid fears that it might collapse.
At the fire's height six crews were tackling the blaze, to both prevent it spreading and put it out.
The fire was extinguished by 7am, and police closed off Hythe Station Road until noon while the building was damped down and secured.
