North Essex: doorstep menace warning

AN Essex charity is warning older people to keep an eye out for unexpected doorstep callers.

Prompted by 52,000 complaints recorded across the UK last year, Age Concern Essex has issued a list of tips to help residents identify bogus visitors.

It is also calling on them to check what types of theft are covered by their household insurance policy.

Bogus callers try to gain access to homes by pretending to be someone they're not, from charity collectors to utilities representatives.

Then, once inside, they try to convince the householder to hand over cash or steal it without them knowing.

Peter Bland, of Age Concern Essex, said: "Anyone representing a large company should carry formal identification, and, if unsure of someone's identity, the golden rule is: don't let them in.

"Theft can be emotionally and financially upsetting, so it is always worth checking what types of theft are covered under home insurance policies."

Age Concern's own home insurance policy covers theft of money by bogus officials or where entry to the home is gained by deception, and profits generated by Age Concern Insurance Services go directly to the charity.

AGE Concern Essex has the following tips:
  • Ask callers for proof of identity. If you are not convinced of their identity, don't let them in
  • Beware of callers attempting to gain access to your home by distracting you
  • Never hand over any cash to a doorstep caller
  • If things do go wrong, contact Consumer Direct immediately on 08454 040506.

Don't tell me it's election time again.

Lib-Lab-Con politicians with their false promises, bogus manifesto and downright lies.

Be warned there are Lib-Lab-Con politicans about.

    Keep your doors locks.
