North Essex: Body found on A12

The southbound track of the A12 between Ipswich and Colchester was closed last night after the discovery of a body.

Members of the public dialled 999 after making the discovery.

Emergency services were called to the Colchester-bound carriageway near Capel St Mary at about 9.45pm last night.

On arrival police confirmed they had discovered a body, believed to be that of a woman. The death is currently being treated as "unexplained".

A car was also recovered from a layby at the scene, which officers are examining for evidence.

The southbound carriageway was closed between the Copdock and East Bergholt junctions until about 5am. The layby remains closed.

A post mortem examination is due to be carried out later today.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the Capel area before 9.45pm or who has any information about this incident, to contact Suffolk Police on 01473 613500

Why was it necessary to close the southbound carriageway for seven hours? Is there a deliberate policy of causing maximum disruption and inconvenience to road users?

I don't call between ten at night and 5 in the morning maximum disruption.

God forbid, if this poor woman was a member of your family, wouldn't you want the police to be doing a through investigation? This is probably why the road was shut off and not just some whim.

maybe it was due to the fact that the body was in such a bad way that the police had to deal with it this way. what if it was your daughter would you want her just shoved in a box and the road reopened, so toss pots like yourself can get home that bit quicker.

What a worm! Let's hope that one of your loved ones is never in this position. For all you know it could be a murder investigation. A dark crime scene, of course it needed to be shut until it had been thoroughly investigated. Quite unbelieavable. Yet wasters like you are the first to criticise the police for failing to investigate things properly. Get a life, unlike the poor sod in question, you loser.

I travel the A12 every day and I'm sad to see that so many people are losing their lives on this road, when I am held up I can only be thankful that I will be going home, if a little late. Unlike this poor sole who will never have that pleasure again. Perhaps Colonial should thank his lucky stars he is able to complain and today he is back Safe and sound at home.

Colonial - what do you think they should do then? Just sweep up and go away so others like yourself are not inconvenienced? Seven hours is quite a short time to close the road for something so major when you consider all the evidence that needs to be collected. Hopefully next time your journey is delayed it is for even longer. Your comment is one of the most insensitive ignorant comments I have ever read. How about a little sympathy for the victim and her family?

The A12 is not just a road it is a major trunk route, it carries a huge amount of freight traffic from our two major sea terminals, Harwich and Felixstowe and its use, in modern parlance, is 24/7. Yes, there has been highly regrettable fatality and it has to be investigated but it is incumbent on the police and the highways agency to restrict disruption of such a major route to a minimum. It may be necessary to initiate a contra flow system or properly signed diversionary routes but it has to be done, it is not acceptable to just close the road, a practice that appears to be increasingly common.

Colonial - How you can suggest that Suffolk Police deliberately caused disruption and inconvenience to road users just beggars belief. Obviously Suffolk Police were securing a crime scene and therefore the closure of the A12 was a necassary measure. This lady's family are entitled to a full and comprehensive investigation. Like Anne, I find your comments insensitive.

Shame on you, Colonial, but I guess you have received the reaction you wished for! A pity attention seeking idiots like you have to get involved. My thoughts rest with the family of the poor woman involved. I drove down the A12 at 2am this morning, and there was very little traffic. I am sure that most of the drivers diverted down the A137 did not mind the extra ten minutes to their journey overnight. The police have every right to seal off and investigate a potential crime scene. I can only hope, Colonial, that you never find yourself in the position of lying injured in the road whilst impatient drivers swerve round you to get home.
