A POPULAR day centre is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Since 1978, the number of Halstead Day Centre members has exploded.

When it was set up in the Senior Citizens Centre, in New Street, there were just 11 members.

The centre, now based in Bridge Street, has a record 90 elderly visitors, aged 74-95, who would otherwise be completey housebound.

Although knitting is a favourite activity, they even enjoy exercise classes, pool, darts, bowls, bingo and trips to the centre's Brightlingsea beach hut.

Ivy Flahant, 93, of Symonds Court, Halstead, said: "We have a laugh here. It's good company."

Internet access is available and visits from a therapy dog are also in the pipeline.

Celebrations will take place in November, the month it was founded.

Veronica Harman, manager, said: "Our members just become our family.

"Working here really makes you feel very humble.

"They're just so happy when they're here.

"One member can't sleep on Monday night because she's so excited about coming here on Tuesday."

The centre has eight members of staff and 24 volunteers, the oldest volunteer being 83.

It offers help with laundry, bathing as well as shopping.

This year's funding has come from the Mid Essex Primary Care Trust and Essex County Council, but the centre relies heavily on grants and fundraising efforts.

They are currently admitting new members.
