Colchester: Soccer legend Groves is fined for bad behaviour
Perry Groves. (53311-1)
Perry Groves. (53311-1)

A former Arsenal and Colchester United football player has been fined by police for "abusive and insulting" language and behaviour.

Perry Groves, who still lives in Colchester, was issued with a fixed penalty notice by officers after he was arrested in Crouch Street.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "A 43-year-old man from Colchester was issued with a fixed penalty notice for a section 5 public order offence, for using abusive and insulting words and behaviour, likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress."

He would not confirm the identity of the arrested man.

When contacted by the Gazette, Mr Groves said he did not want to comment, but dismissed the incident as "nothing" and insisted the fixed penalty notice was "just a fine".

The 43-year-old began his footballing career as an apprentice at Colchester United in 1981. He turned professional a year later, playing 142 league games and scoring 26 goals for the club over the next four seasons.

In 1986 he transferred to Arsenal, where he played for six years before moving to Southampton.

The Crouch Street incident took place at about 1.15am on April 26.

MrC you beat me to it.

    Legend...haha
Hardly, though he likes to think that.

Too quick for me too.... Surely one of the most inappropriate uses of the word ever. Was their a hint of irony Ms Parsons?

I think the "legend" description has something to do with he was part of the Arsenal squad that won league titles. Arsenal fans still chant his name at matches such is his popularity.

And perhaps for the fact he scored two hat-tricks for the U's against Southend in the same season.

At least in Colchester we don't have open top bus parades for something that happened 30 years ago.

I think the fact that Perry Groves autobiopgraphy has out sold Frank Lampard & Rio Ferdinands suggests that to many of us Gooners he is a legend.

Jason - Col U don't have open top bus parades for things that happened 30yrs ago? Why would they? What did they do?

    Footballing legends:

    Sir Bobby Charlton - check
    Sir Geoff Hurst - check
    Sir Bobby Robson - check
    Perry Groves - erm....

Or maybe it's referring to his legendary status at Smiths!!

Of course we didn't have one 30 years ago, rather we had one two years ago, ten years ago and sixteen years ago.

As far as drinking is concerned Perry could learn a lot from legendary drunks George Burley and Alan Brazil.

Rumour has it that Alan Lee is also a drunk, which explains why he falls over on the pitch so much.

Would "Say It Like It Is" like to qualify any of the comments above? Or just leave it to the relative lawyers!?

Oh, and did Col Who win the FA Cup in 2006, 1998 and 1992? Doesn't say so in my reference books. Or are you talking about another national event?

Surely the highlight of their existence was in 1971? Surely you were there....it seems that approximately 100,000 others claim to have been!!

FA Cup? Oh, you mean that thing that you can win just by winning six matches? No, those three memorable ColU years were all PROMOTIONS - things that you win by being consistently the best over a whole season!
Posted by: MrC, North Essex on 7:13pm Thu 8 May 08
Dear God Meryl...promotions from the Conference?! You've got to be a pretty ropey team to find yourself there in the first place! And your promotion to the heady heights of the Championship didn't last too long did it?!

Where are all those fantastic players who were on the bus two years ago? They saw the light and got out PDQ.

Anyway back to the Perry Groves "Legend " status...

Mr. C you is so bitter and twisted coz you made the wrong choice when you was a kid and have to support the tractor girls. The only real farming you can do now is ploughing back thirty years in ya reference book. By the way 2-0! Up the U's and up yours Mr. C.

    WRONG CHOICE!!!!
What is wrong with you col u fans?why can you not see that Ipswich are by far the better team? Winning the FA Cup is a fantastic achievment, 30 years ago or otherwise. winning the FA Cup in '78 and the UEFA Cup in '81 are in living memory so why would we need to look in a reference book? Should change your name to pathetic and jealous CBC. When you get promoted to the premiership and finish in 5th place in your first season in the big time, then you can say you are the better team, not a 2-0 victory in a season that you were relegated!!

It strikes me that Perry Groves is hardly a legend in anyone's book. He was a bread and butter player, who happened to have a good game in the League Cup Final many years ago. Ask an Arsenal fan to name a Gunner Legend and I very much doubt he will be on the list.

As for his book selling out, just look around you, the great British public are besotted with celebrity. I reckon if the former Highbury toilet cleaner brought out a book, dishing the dirt so to speak, it'd be a bestseller.
