A motorist was lucky to be alive after his car spun off a Colchester road, flew 15ft in the air, and collided with a railway bridge today.
The Alfa Romeo vehicle is thought to have clipped the embankment and spun off the A12 as it travelled near to Stratford St Mary, heading towards Ipswich, at about 3am.
Crews from Colchester Fire Station were first to the scene. They put the man in the back of the fire engine and administered first aid while they waited for the ambulance crew to arrive.
Paramedics put him on a back board, and he was taken to hospital.
Police were called and the road had to be shut while an engineer inspected the bridge.
