Tendring: A120 upgrade not likely before 2013
COMMUNITY leaders have spoken out over a busy stretch of road they say is long overdue for an upgrade.
Improvement work on the A120, from Hare Green to Harwich, was hoped to start next year as part of the £300 million Bathside Bay container port project.
During a Manningtree town council meeting, councillors spoke out over the road improvements which they say need to be done for motorists' safety.
Ann Hoskins said: "You get a line of lorries just coming towards you and a line coming behind you, and some vehicles will try and overtake. The road is dangerous."
Ray Streames said: "Sometimes you get the continental drivers who don't even know what side of the road they should be on. The sooner the improvements are made the better."
Paul Davey, head of corporate affairs at Huchison Ports, said the road upgrade was now unlikely to start until at least 2013.
He said: "Things have changed so much since we first started talking about it, and the whole consent process and the approval process have slowed the whole project down."
A stage-one study by the Highways Agency to determine what work was needed to upgrade the A120 and accommodate the thousands of extra lorries expected on the road everyday because of the new port, is currently being completed.
A public consultation will then need to take place on the road, which has been the site of numerous accidents.
