Alresford, Colchester: Man persuaded to leave river

Coastguards were called to assist a man who waded into the River Colne near Alresford.

The 18-year-old from Colchester had been out with a carer when he refused to leave the water yesterday about 3pm, and Thames Coastguards were alerted.

A lifeboat crew from Clacton and the air-sea rescue helicopter from Wattisham, Suffolk, persuaded the man to leave the water around half an hour later.

He did not need hospital treatment.

I wonder if this was the same 18 year old (with carer) who had to be rescued from the mud in Mersea a few weeks ago? Or perhaps he was just another random idiot? Either way it was a waste of valuable rescue resources. Perhaps if he was made to pay for the cost of the rescue (or the carer was) they'd both be less likely to let it happen again.

I object to the above comment. If the boy has a carer he obviously is not well, and it is unfair to refer to him as 'another random idiot'

yes this was the same man who went in at Mersea who had two carers with him at the time. If anyone should be asked to pay for the cost of the rescue this should be down to them. This would never happen as most of the cost is left to the tax payer and the kind souls who dig deep for the RNLI.

I apologise for causing offence. On looking back I was too hard and the language I used was inappropriate. In retrospect I accept the lad probably has learning difficulties which is no doubt why he has a carer. That hadn't really crossed my mind when I wrote it. But please can't his carer stop him getting into these scrapes?

Obviously realising that the person has some kind of learning difficulty, Hopefully the carers will learn from this chaps behaviour, and hopefully it wont happen again, is he a 1 to 1 or 2 to 1, by the sound he should be 2 on 1 and perhaps there should be a RISK ASSESSMENT done for the next outing.....

When you look at the whys and where fors of incidents of this nature. Before condeming the carer,
ask your self this questions
Where is Social Services when the Care staff need them?
They dream up these packages for Learning Dissabillities who have behavoural problems in the community. Was the right assesment done?
Was the company involved given the facts of this case when they took on the job.
where the Staff trained to deal with Behavour?
Facts that are not taken into consideration
Fact; Council taxes have gone up by 3 percent every year.
Fact; Agencies to look after clients in the Community have been paid for the last 4 years is £12.51 per hour.
Fact:Social Services are employed by County Councils
Fact;Out of that rate comes Holiday pay, Employers insurance, overheads and Care wages.
Fact; The vast majority of carers are lucky if they get £7/hour.
Fact; Many donnot get petrol allowance. And those that do are on average 20p/mile
Fact;Council workers get 40p/mile and a free care parking space in the Town centre.
Fact;Care workers who work for Agencies, to get a pay increase have to leave their current job.
Fact; There is no council pension offered to Care workers.
So why is it That Concil increases are not filtered down to there care worker?
Fact; If care goes wronge the Social workers come out of the woodwork to condem the worker.
Fact;Care workers now have to be NVQ up to level 2 in Social Care.
They have to give 3 references to work in care and have to be CRB, which in some cases they have to pay for.If they are agency worker, they donot get paid wages for Annual training. I would like to go on but I have to start work on a Sunday with basic pay of £7/hour
