A pregnant teacher fears her house will be repossessed due to a maternity pay misunderstanding.

Sharon Chapman, of Salvia Close, Clacton, is six months pregnant and has been teaching full-time at schools throughout Essex for the past eight years, including Alton Park in Clacton.

Before starting a new job at Heybridge Primary School in November, the 33-year-old undertook supply teaching at Clacton's St Clare's and Cann Hall schools over a two-month period.

Because of this break in contractual work, she has been told that she will not receive any maternity pay from employer Essex County Council - which has left her devastated.

"Come June, I will lose my income and go down to £112 a week maternity pay from the state," said Miss Chapman, who recently broke up with the father of her baby.

"Even with interest-only mortgage payments, I would still need to find £560 per month - as well as all my other bills. I have spoken to my mortgage company, who will repossess the house if I fall behind for three months.

"I know I was doing supply work, but I was on the payroll of Essex County Council.

"Why can't they give me any grace?"

A spokesman for Essex County Council told the Gazette: "There are two types of maternity pay available for teaching staff - contractual and statutory.

"The contractual pay is only available to staff on a contract and therefore would not apply to supply staff.

"The statutory pay is a Government payment based on a teacher's average earnings before they go on leave."

Miss Chapman is not entitled to housing benefit until her 36th week on benefits because she own her own home. Working family tax credit is based on the previous financial years income, which is no good to her now.
Yes the child benefit will go up but not by enough to make th kind of difference she needs to pay her morgage.
Miss Chapman is planning to back to work as soon as October/Novewmber.
Yes there are people much worse off, but would you like to have to explain to a 10 year old boy why he has to live in a BB? Because of the 22,000 on the council housing waiting list, that is what Miss Chapman has been told will happen.
Not only will she and her sone and new baby loose their home but most of their things too.
She didnt want sympathy, just to raise the issue.
