Colchester: 14-year-old girl killed in road accident
A TEENAGE girl from Colchester has died following a road accident.
The 14-year-old was in collision with a blue Volkswagen Golf travelling towards Layer-de-la-Haye on Layer Road at the junction with Lordswood Road at about 4.50pm on Friday afternoon.
She was treated for serious injuries by parademics at the scene before being rushed to Colchester General Hospital, where she died.
Part of Layer Road was closed off for around three-and-a-half hours last night to allow police to investigate.
Anyone with information about the crash is urged to call Stanway Road Policing Unit on 01206 762512.
* A 27-year-old man from the Colchester area was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
He was given unconditional bail to return to Colchester Police Station on May 23.

How very sad, sympathies to the parents and loved ones.
Let's not have the usual outpouring of hate and reviling towards the driver. He will have to suffer the rest of his own life with the knowledge of what he has done. That is a sort of life sentence, and however "hard" he seems, he will always know the awfulness of what happened and to what extent he was or was not to blame.
Whether or not he could have avoided hitting the cyclist, and how much the drink was to blame or not, he is obviously going to to be punished by the Courts. Think about the impact on his life and whether you consider this to be sufficient or not, realise he will not ever really be free from his own conscience.

A permanent speed camara should be considered on layer road. So many children walk and play nearby. Cowdray avenue has a 40mph speed camara but pedestrians rarely cross that road. Camaras are there to save lives not to make money through tickets. Second youngster in recent months. Action needed please.

James, Cowdray avenue is about twice the width of Layer Road which is why people don't cross.
Speed cameras wouldn't have stopped this unfortunate accident.

layer road has become a permanant danger zone for children around the shrub end area. there should be speed cameras all over that road if not for speeding then for the safety of the children travelling around there.
my condolences to the family.

My heart sank when i saw the police there yesterday. Second tragic accident on this road in a few months. My son crosses this road every morning to get to school and each day i worry but now im tempted to drive him which in itself increases the problem. Do something about this road please!!! The feeble measures put in a while ago are a joke.

I apologise for assuming that the young girl involved in the accident was a cyclist.
It is however heartening to see that the response to this news item is constructive and a great attempt is being made to find a solution. Whether any of the ideas will be implemented comes down to the endless saga of costs, EU rules and local rules, but with such a volume of traffic it is obvious that in the name of humanity, something drastic needs to be done, and soon.

Yet again what a tragic loss of life, a couple of feet away from the last death on that stretch of road. I cycle nearly every day down Layer road but I wont go on the road because of the inconsideration of some car drivers, even the zebra crossings are not safe twice I have been nearly knocked over whilst in the middle of the crossing, my thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends for the loss of thier daughter.

Even roundabouts at each of the junctions would have a calming effect on this road. It would make peoples approach to the road different as they wouldnt fly down it as they do now. We have roundabouts everywhere but the obvious areas it seems.

I disagree with Juno about being sympathetic to the driver, he got in a car after taking drug or drink, I really think the UK should have the death penalty for such an offence.

At no time did I ask for "sympathy" for the driver.
My mail was an attempt to give some dignity to the correspondence in these mails for once. We are after all talking about the death of a young girl where the grief of all who knew and loved her will be bad enough.
Take an example from the kids who knew the victim, and put out some positive thought. Leave the judgement and the violent reactions aside and wait for the Law and the parents to have their say, when the full facts are known.

R.I.P Jordan bbe!
No to this Road!
I agree that the traffic lights were a bad idea but can still be used effectively if another means of safety was placed on the roads aswell i.e speed bumps or roundabouts.
But the only problem with roundabouts is how will pedestrians cross safely even with the little island crossings?

I could not believe it when i heard that another young life has been taken on Layer Road, so tragic. The driver will have to live with his actions for the rest of his life.
Now it is time to sort Layer Road out. So many children crossing there, and they want more of our young children to cross there when they shut Blaxill!!. How many more young inocent lives will we have to loose before something is done. Please think hard before closing the school and making all of our children cross that road going to Monwick. I know that the Blaxil crew will all be heart broken. But they will make Jordan proud.

Couldn`t believe it when my friend told me about the accident on Friday night exactly 4 months after Alex died.I didn`t know either family but my elder son attends AB school and knew Jordan.
I hope and pray the driver gets life for killing her drinking and drug abuse are so wrong.
Lets get some speed bumps in place up and down Layer Road before another death occurs.
My thoughts are with Jordan`s family and also with Alex`s family.
Both of whom will be and are missed by many,R.I.P little one,you are safe in the arm of Jesus with Alex now, watching down on all your family and friends.

R.I.P
Please do somthing about this road its getting more and more dangerous... Children have to cross it to get too and from school they are being out at risk slow that traffic down because people are flying down it like they own it ... and its not right
change layer road.
R.I.P
jordan
Missed and loved.

There is a lot of ill informed comment here; if you bother to read the report in the local press you will find that the driver was arrested - (the police arrest wnenever they can now, it helps boost thir figures) - 'on suspicion of.....' and then released on unconditional bail until 23rd May. If the police had any sort of a case he would have been charged! Do keep in mind that the previous fatality involved a young boy who was not even on the road but riding towards the pedestrian crossing on the footpath. The suggestion is that he realised at the last minute that he was not going to get across ahead of the bus, braked hard and was pitched over the handle bars and under the wheels of the bus. this was not an accident that could be attributed in any way to the condition of, or the way, that a vehicle was being driven on that road.

Apologies about a misspelt word in above; 'helps boost [bold]their[/bold] figures'

If it is proved that the driver of this car was under the influence of either alcohol or drugs, he should be charged with murder. He was in charge of a leathal weapon - one ton of metal hitting an un-protected human being. Ignorance is not a defence he either drunk alcolhol or took drugs as reported both of which can affect judgement.

Jordan...
beautiful niece and cousin..
you will be so sadly missed by us all sweetheart!
Lost and Bewildered
Confused and frightened,
Where do i begin,
So mixed up inside,
Feelings all in a spin.
i don’t know what to do,
head is screaming,
Too many nightmares,
That i keep on dreaming.
Do I cut off,
I just want to sleep,
Lost and bewildered,
In my heart I weep.
So much hurt,
I’m crying out in pain,
All I want to do is,
bring you back again.
To our brother steve and our lovely sister in law...
look after each other
and know that we are here any time day or night....
all our love auntie jane, cousins craig emilyrose...
auntie vicky and cousin georgia

To Jordan's parents and friends:
I don't know a whole lot of people in the colchester community yet and I don't know you folks, but I also have a 14 year old daughter and my heart goes out to you and all her friends and family.
It's heartwrenching to read this article and see the response and think of her parents. I'm sure she was beautiful inside and out and I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Jordan you will be missed so very much by everyone who knew you. I only knew you through my son.
My heart goes out to your mom and dad and all of your friends and family right now. My son is missing you terribly. He has spoke of nothing else since last Friday. You made him smile. You shared some pretty special times together. He wont forget you and neither will anyone else that you touched with your smile and laughter.
You were one in a million babe and although you maybe gone you will never ever be forgotten.
Rest in Peace Honey

Steve & Michelle, all of us at LA Fitness send our heartfelt condolences. I had to speak to Steve today, and as a mother of a 14 year old daughter, it broke my heart - I can't even imagine what you are both going through but we are all thinking of you.
