There’s plenty of music on offer this Bank Holiday in Colchester.

At the Brewhouse in Queen Street they kick of the sounds on Friday with Douglas from Profusion Sound System playing a selection of music from around the world, from Ethiopian Jazz, to Bangra House.

Then on the Saturday sees the return of The Hokum Boys to the venue with guitarist Kevin and vocalist Lee performing blues classics. The duo will be more than ably supported by Colchester’s newest superstars Sandcastle Jesus, playing a mixture of original rock and well known indie tunes.

At Three Wise Monkeys in the town’s High Street, they start the Bank holiday party off early with seasoned local singer/songwriter Paolo Morena performing as the Mighty Small.

On Friday Essex Rocks presents a cracking line-up of new bands including Ransoms, hunt for titans and Faith in Physic s, while on Saturday Colchester favourite electro pop superstars, FOX, take to the Top Floor stage.

They’ll be supported by Arcade Hearts and a new band to watch out for Reno and Rome, a four-piece from across the Suffolk border who have already got airplay from the likes of BBC Introducing and Radio 2’s Dermot O’Leary.

Last, but by no means least, it’s time to don your best Frankie Says Relax t-shirt for the return of TWM’s Club Tropicana 80s Pop Club Night on the Sunday.

Over at the Colchester Arts Centre, while the ELO Encounter might be sold out for the Saturday night, get yourself along to the Church Street venue on the Sunday for an evening of jazz with rising sax star Alex Hitchcock and his quintet made-up of James Copus (Trumpet/Flugelhorn), Will Barry (Piano), Joe Downard (Double Bass) and Jay Davis (Drums).

Doors open at 7pm.

Finally if it’s jazz you’re fond of then make sure you support some homegrown talent who just happens to be one of the most renowned jazz guitarists in the world.

That’s Wivenhoe’s Chris Allard who regularly plays with Jaqui Dankworth and has recently returned from playing a concert in front of the Egyptian pyramids.

He’s making a welcome return to Fleece Jazz, which takes place at the Stoke By Nayland Golf and Country Club in Leavenheath. Doors open at 7.30pm this Friday.
