Wivenhoe’s inaugural free film festival starts this weekend.

Entitled Reel Lives and made-up of mainly documentaries, biographies and true stories, it starts on Friday, April 20, at the Nottage on the Quay with Human Flow by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei (pictured), a documentary about the displacement of people around the world.

Then on Saturday there’s a double bill at the William Loveless Hall with Half Way at 3pm and Prick Up Your Ears at 7.30pm.

Continuing until April 29, other highlights include All the President’s Men, The Death of Stalin and Loving Vincent.

As well as the screenings there will be a number of special introductions, talks and live music.

Bob Jaques, co-chair of the Festival, says: “Our town must be unique in having not one but two separate film groups, Wivenhoe Film Club at the Nottage, specialising in independent and world cinema, and Moving Image, which shows mostly more mainstream releases at the Williams Loveless Hall. This year’s festival is a chance for the groups to work together, with a view to broadening further the support for community cinema.”
