Author Sue Townsend was much more than the creator of that most modern of diarists Adrian Mole, she was also a talented playwright.

And if you need convincing get along to the Headgate Theatre next week to see one of her most bitter sweet plays Bazaar and Rummage.

Set in 1981 it centres around an agoraphobics support group and their well-meaning social workers who are holding a rummage sale to raise awareness of the condition and to get the group to make those first tentative steps outside.

Director Amy L Feeley says: “The play and the story challenge its audience to think about why people are the way that they are and the damaging long term effects that the actions of others can have. This will be a rollercoaster of a ride for the audience taking them from laughter to shock to sadness, at times all in the space of a few moments.”

This is Amy’s second production for the Headgate Theatre, following on from the sell-out Yes Prime Minister last year and she has brought together an ensemble of some of the best actors in the area to bring the story to life including Helen Bridge, Victoria Davies and Jayne Sheeran.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better cast,” she adds. “The rehearsal process has been an exciting time, what I like most about them is their willingness to take creative risks and unlimited ideas and enthusiasm.

“The set is also something else. We’ve created an entire sale with period jumble. The crew, especially Dawn King, have really excelled in finding some real vintage gems - if you can call 1981 vintage.”

Bazaar and Rummage runs at the Headgate Theatre, Colchester, from Wednesday until Saturday, March 14 to 17, at 7.30pm with a matinee at 2.30pm on the Saturday.
