Not only at the top of the list, alphabetically speaking, but also of all the various singer/songwriters that have graced the Colchester stage in recent years.

But while both Adrian Nation and Ady Johnson have subsequently gone on to pastures new to ply their trade, every year they grace us with their magical presence.

Clacton’s Adrian has just released his fourth album, Anarchy and Love. ahead of a five-week tour of Canada.

The album is a blend of politically-charged protest, rolling road songs, high energy instrumentals as well as a moving tribute to the life of his father, who passed away just before the release of the previous album. For the first time Adrian has written and recorded songs on electric guitar, but also keeps his unique acoustic style.

Adrian says: “The day before the album came out it was already a number 9 in the CKUA Radio Network in Canada and it had been picked up by Radio Caroline and in South Africa and the US. It’s really building up.”

Anarchy and Love follows the success of his third album Live at Crossroads, which itself was picked up by Andy Donnelly of the CKUA Radio Network in Alberta and led to a 17-show tour in the country in 2015 and festival appearances last year.

Joining Adrian on stage once again is Ady Johnson, who prior to embarking on a very successful solo career was perhaps best known as the front man for retro indie rockers FuzzFace.

Since moving to London Ady has performed at 6Fest for BBC6 Music, famously after being spotted busking outside and then asked to fill in for a band on the main bill after they cancelled.

He’s also toured with Scott Matthews, Ben Howard and Willy Mason, and performed various summer festivals including Latitude. His latest album, London Songs, is due for release in February.

Ady Johnson and Adrian Nation play the Headgate Theatre, Chapel Street North, Colchester, on Wednesday at 7.30pm. For tickets, priced £12 and £10, call 01206 366000.
