THIS Wednesday sees the opening night of Gypsy, the "original showbiz musical" at the Palace Theatre.

Presented by the Little Theatre Company, this show, said to be "one of the greatest musicals of all time", is based on the true life memoirs of legendary burlesque entertainer, Gypsy Rose Lee, and celebrates both sides of the sparkling, yet shadowy world of show business.

The Little Theatre Company says it is thrilled to be giving this musical its long-awaited regional revival at the theatre in London Road, Westcliff.

Stephanie Wilson, a theatrical stalwart with such roles as Norma Desmond (Sunset Boulevard) and Miss Hannigan (Annie) under her belt, plays Momma Rose.

She says: “It's quite rare for a musical to have such a feisty, strong woman who goes through such a wide range of emotions, not to mention powerful songs. I've always loved the show and the character so it's a real dream to play Rose.”

The show is being directed by Darren Harper, who previously directed award-winning productions of 42nd Street and Legally Blonde.

Darren says: “When I saw Imelda Staunton play Rose at the Chichester Festival, it really hit home what a fabulous show this is, with some truly unique characters requiring stellar performances. I couldn’t wait to get started on our own production.”

The story is set with Momma Rose and her two daughters, Baby June and Louise, who trek across America in their family vaudeville act. But times are changing, audiences are expecting more, and the two girls have their own ambitions in mind. When June marries and leaves, Rose turns her hopes and attentions to her elder, less obviously talented, daughter Louise. The rise of burlesque is upon them and nothing will ever be the same again for Momma Rose.

With lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by Arthur Laurents and music by Jule Styne, Gypsy features songs that have since become show standards - famously helping to launch Sondheim’s career - including Everything’s Coming Up Roses, Some People, Let Me Entertain You and Rose’s Turn.

Gypsy - A Musical Fable opens November 8 - 11 and includes a matinee performance.
