A new docu-drama about Queen Elizabeth I will contrast the monarch’s point of view with those of her enemies, Channel 5 has announced.

The three-part history series Elizabeth I will feature duelling narratives as well as dramatic reconstructions in which three different actors will play the Tudor monarch at different stages in her life, from a young princess to a newly-crowned Queen and an ageing survivor.

The channel also announced two new natural history series, one about Alaska and one about the wildlife in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors.

A Year in the Wild of Alaska, a four-part series, will document how flora and fauna survive in the brutal climate, while The Dales and Moors: A Year in the Wild, will record the lives of the animals that live there in their full glory.

Remote cameras will film inside nests, while drones, cranes and tracking time-lapses will show off the landscape.

Both series will air in 2017.

Channel 5 also confirmed the return of mockumentary comedy Borderline for a second series.

Announcing the shows at the Edinburgh International TV Festival, Ben Frow, director of programmes at Channel 5, said: “Today’s announcement underlines the evolution of the channel; we’re building on our successes with high-quality commissions that increase the breadth, range and appeal of our home-grown programming.

“The critical reaction to Borderline has been really encouraging as we begin to build our comedy portfolio.”
