One Direction’s Niall Horan has labelled the referendum outcome a “sad day” for the United Kingdom.

The singer also blasted Ukip leader Nigel Farage over comments he made on Good Morning Britain regarding the NHS.

Mr Farage told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid after the exit vote that it was a mistake for the Leave campaign to have said they would funnel the millions given to the EU every week into the NHS, as they could not guarantee it.

Niall, 22, wrote in a series of tweets: “How can you sway that many people into thinking their health service is going to be funded and when the vote goes your way… Tell them we shouldn’t have said that and it was a mistake. Bulls**t.”

Harry Potter author JK Rowling also expressed her sadness at the Brexit result.

Earthquake singer Labrinth echoed Niall’s “sad day” sentiment.

The Thick Of It’s Armando Iannucci made light of the outcome on Twitter.

Singer Josh Groban made a plea to businessmen Sir Richard Branson and Elon Musk.

Former Top Gear presenter James May pondered whether he would “have to drink beer from a glass with a handle on it”.

Television producer and former EastEnders boss Dominic Treadwell-Collins also joined the conversation:
