Give A Little Love – Bugsy Malone is coming out on DVD for the first time ever.
It’s been almost 40 years since the hit gangster musical – starring an all-child cast – opened in cinemas. And to celebrate being able to take a splurge down memory lane and watch Bugsy, Tallulah, Fat Sam and pals all over again, we’ve checked up on some of the stars.
Are they Down and Out, or Feeling Fine? Here’s what’s happened to some of the cast of Bugsy Malone since they starred in Alan Parker’s classic movie.
Bugsy Malone aka Scott Baio
After getting his big break as the star of the movie, Scott has gone on to have an extensive acting career in TV and independent film. The 54-year-old has had regular roles in Diagnosis Murder, Arrested Development and is currently starring in family comedy See Dad Run.
Blousey Brown aka Florrie Dugger
Florrie was living on a United States Air Force base in England when she was cast as Bugsy’s love interest Blousey. She did not pursue a career in acting afterwards, but instead joined the United States Air Force.
Tallulah aka Jodie Foster
Jodie was already a child star when she was cast as gangster’s moll Tallulah, having appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, which earned her her first Oscar nomination.
After totally stealing the show in Bugsy, it is no surprise Jodie went on to have a very successful film career. The 52-year-old actress is known for Oscar-winning performances in films such as The Silence Of The Lambs, and has now even branched out into directing. Her next film Money Monster, out next year, stars George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Jack O’Connell and Dominic West.
Fat Sam aka John Cassissi
John carried on acting as a child, appearing in US TV show Fish until 1978. But he decided the big screen wasn’t for him, and is now believed to be working in construction.
Baby Face aka Dexter Fletcher
Baby-faced Dexter went on to become a teenage heartthrob in kids TV show Press Gang, and his successful acting career includes roles in Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels and Band Of Brothers.
Like Jodie the 49-year-old star has now moved behind the camera, and perhaps inspired by his big break in Bugsy, had a box office smash directing Proclaimer’s musical Sunshine On Leith.
Oscar DeVelt aka Mark Curry
OK, so everyone knows Dexter Fletcher was in Bugsy Malone. But did you spot Blue Peter presenter Mark Curry? As a young lad, the TV presenter played Oscar, the snooty theatre producer in the musical.
Lena Marelli aka Bonnie Langford
Former child star Bonnie’s career was just taking off back in 1976 when she played theatrical diva Lena. She continued along a similar vein when she starred as lispy Violet Elizabeth Bott in the 1970s TV adaptation of Just William.
It was onwards and upwards after that with a starring role in Doctor Who and a highly successful stage career in the West End and on Broadway. Bonnie is still starring in musicals today at the age of 50, so the spirit of Lena lives on.
O’Dreary the policeman aka Andrew Paul
Not only was a young Andrew Paul bitten by the acting bug, he was bitten by the policing bug too, it seems. The 54-year-old actor is now best known for playing PC Dave Quinnan in ITV cop show The Bill for 13 years.
Bugsy Malone is distributed by ITV Studios Global Entertainment and is being released on DVD on Monday April 6, 2015.
