Gran Turismo5 Prologue

Playstation 3
Age 3+
RRP £24.99

Some people get upset at paying out for a game that is basically a cut down version of one that's on its way, and that is what Gran Turismo5 Prologue is.

But it's great, and of course with websites like eBay out there, just sell it off for a chunk of your money back come the big day when the full version is launched.

Having said this is a cut down version of the full title, you do get an awfully lot in there - millions of cars and tracks and hours of fun getting used to the controls.

Well, lots of them at least. There are three categories to complete with around 10 races in each with loads and loads of cars to be bought.

The Formula 1 Ferrari costs two million credits, so play lots. I can't believe we are up to the fifth edition of this game - I am getting old. The menu music is calming lounge bar jazz, and the cockpit view is stunning.

Much is made of the real world physics but this is always going to be an arcade game. STILL no damage model, at least not in this version which is a crying shame. It means you can just plough into a sharp turn at full speed, bounce off the rival cars or wall and set off again having cheated your way past half the field. That's just wrong. Guess what's going to happen online all the time - it gets tiring and is by far the worst aspect of this mega-title.

Lots of easy support for steering wheels in the controller set up which is nice to see.

There is also lots of tinkering to do with the skills levels for the actual driving. Ten stages of traction control if you can believe it. Not sure who needs level 10 - the cars barely move.

I am looking forward to the full game and in the meantime, I am getting back to my Nissan Skyline to perfect that braking and turn-in without any driving aids. Great.
